my take so far
Published on August 2, 2007 By straniera In Just Hanging Out
So far I have loved being part of JU! I have learned so much. Seriously. I have learned about politics and personal relations, religion and lots of other things. I know way more about current events too since joining JU. I hate watching the news because it usually makes me sick or depressed. On JU I can choose what stuff I want to know about. Yea!

Another positive side effect is that it has edged me back toward creative writing. Maybe blogging doesn’t really count as creative writing, but at least I’m writing! I find myself day dreaming (and sometimes even dreaming at night) about catchy titles and witty content that will garner attention and praise. Which is a nearly impossible task with all the intelligent/witty/hilarious JU ers out there!!!

I am also slowly learning the lingo. I have never been one to mince words…including using acronyms or abreviations. People usually laugh at my wordy text messages. However, here it is somehow exciting to try to figure out what those capital letters mean. Here are some I have figured out so far (let me know if I’m wrong) and some I am clueless on:

OMG – Oh my gosh/goodness/etc.
SIL – Sister in Law
BTW – By the way
LMAO – Laughing my a** off
JFC – ????

I have also learned a great deal about blogging and (as I mentioned in my welcome article) surviving the JU culture. Here is my own little proverb style version of the lessons I’ve learned:

A lot of people have a lot of really good things to say; some people are just jerks.

If you want to guarantee a response to your comment, make sure it’s controversial or at least sarcastic.

Outsiders are welcome…to look in from the outside!

Don’t judge a person by one post; you never know how hungry, tired, drunk, angry, irritated, distracted, lonely…they were when they wrote it.

I’m sure there are more, but I’m running out of creative juices…
I really have enjoyed JU and look forward to sticking around for a long time to come.

Now that sounds like recovery talk to me, Music to my ears.

! Wow, JU a Culture! Who would could have predicted that?! I can't figure the JFC either...new to me. Glad you're getting your writing juices going!

Just to clarify, no one has been a jerk to me, but as I read other threads, every once in awhile, I find myself thinking "Ok, what did that add to the conversation? It was just rude!"

Wow, JU a Culture! Who would could have predicted that?!

Yeah...maybe I should look up the definition of "culture" exactly, but it is definitely another world in here!

Neat blog.

I know the answer to JFC, but I'm not going to tell you because it's not very nice.

Some people here (and elsewhere) ARE just jerks. If you want a list of names I can compose one for you.

As in life, often times the JUsers who garner the most attention are the loudest or most annoying.

I'm pleased you're enjoying your time here so far as it really is a good community despite some of the jerks (San Chonino, while self-deprecating, is actually one of the good guys).

SC is in trouble with me since he let me forget that I was supposed to meet him while he was on vacation.

From the oh so dependable Wikipedia:
Culture (from the Latin cultura stemming from colere, meaning "to cultivate,") generally refers to patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give such activity significance.

Totally JU! There are definitely patterns of activity and symbolic structures!! I can't claim to be an expert on this yet as I am new around these here parts.

I guess we kind of need the jerks around too. Helps me remember to be super careful not to be one! Although everyone is entitled to a down day here and there.

Unfortunately the first part of your statement is too true...

I like this...this is something one should definitely take into consideration.

Blogging is writing!  Some do it better than others, but in our instant gratification society, writing is becoming a lost art.  And Blogging does help bring it back (what text messaging destroys, blogging restores).

Glad you are getting acclimated.  Some avoid the controversial forums like the plague, yet contribute a lot of good articles and comments elsewhere.  To each their own. It is a community, and welcome to it!

He killed Kenny?

My best advice in regards to that is to steer clear, don't take sides, and take each person at face value until they give you reason not to. In other words, don't allow these conflicts, and the way the combatants participating in them behave, to influence your own opinion.

I'm doing my best, but thanks for the warning.

This will probably be me...well, unless I have something worth while to say. But I don't argue purely for the sake of arguing so...Hopefully I won't do anything to make any enemies that want to argue with me.

Two more abbreviations for ya, straniera:

IMHO = in my humble opinion

IMEABO (my abbreviation) = in my extremely arrogant, biased opinion.
