or landscape artists, take your pick

The gardeners were here today. I heard them outside while I was on the phone trying to listen very carefully to someone for whom English was obviously a second language. One of the things that attracted us to this particular apartment complex is the fact that it is so nicely landscaped and green (they water every night). It just makes me smile every time I come out my door.

Well, I didn’t smile today. First of all, as I came down my staircase there was a pile of branches right at the bottom. We had some bad weather yesterday and today so at first I thought maybe the wind had torn the tree up. Then I noticed the smooth diagonal cuts. Nope, not the wind, the chainsaw! As we walked on toward the car I looked at the other plants and bushes along the way…all whacked off and pathetic looking.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want branches grabbing me as I walk down the side walk. I am also not a gardener by any means, so I don’t really know what the answer is, but surely that is not it! There was one plant was particularly sad looking because they had cut against the direction the branches/leaves were growing. Man I wish I knew more about plants so I could find a picture. I may just have to take one with my digital camera tomorrow.

I am not a tree hugger. I don’t think plants have the same rights as human beings, but the way they were so brutally mutilated…just makes me sad!

I know, but surely pruning doesn't look so horrific!

As my husband says, "You don't just go hacking, you prune with purpose!"
